According to the OH Department of Education, OH teachers currently employed in an Ohio public school or district, chartered non-public school or community school are responsible for the design of an Individual Professional Development Plan.
In accordance with the approved plan, the educator must complete:

- Dates of coursework:Educators who wish to renew their licenses must have completed courseworkafter the issue date of the license they wish to renew.
- Course requirements for currently expiring licenses:Complete six semester hours of coursework. Educators must complete renewal coursework prior to September 1 of the expiration year of the license to be renewed, or the renewal requirement increases to nine semester hours.
- Course requirements for licenses that have lapsed for up to five years:Complete nine semester hours of coursework.
- Course requirements for licenses that have lapsed more than five years: Complete twelve semester hours of coursework.
Candidates who hold an orientation and mobility specialist, school psychologist, or school counselor license may renew with renewal coursework or professional development (as approved by their local professional development committees).
How do I remove a reading or phonics limitations on my Ohio teaching license?
Educators requesting an Early Childhood, Primary Childhood, Middle Childhood or Intervention Specialist license must successfully complete at least 12 semester hours of coursework in the teaching of reading through a regionally accredited university. This coursework must include at least one separate course of at least three semester hours in the teaching of phonics in the context of reading, writing and spelling. Educators who completed their educator preparation program out-of-state will not have met this requirement, so the Department will issue a license to the educator with the limitation placed upon it to complete the reading coursework requirement prior to the expiration date of the license.
Ohio law requires that you complete all required coursework in the teaching of reading before renewing and/or advancing your teaching license. The limitation will be removed from your license when you provide a transcript from an accredited college or university that provides evidence that you successfully completed the requirements.
How does an Alternative Resident Educator advance to a professional license?
Candidates must complete the following coursework requirements to advance to the five-year professional license:
- Twelve semester hours of professional education coursework, from an accredited college or university, in the principles and practices of teaching, student development and learning, pupil assessment procedures, curriculum development, classroom management and teaching methodology, AND
- A three semester hour course in the teaching of reading in the content area for all subject areas except integrated language arts and intervention specialist licensure areas, which require successful completion of at least six semester hours in the teaching of reading (including at least one separate three semester hour teaching of phonics course).
What are the coursework requirements for a currently expiring resident educator licenses?
Three semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching or area of licensure. Educators must complete their renewal coursework and submit the renewal application prior to October 1 of the expiration year of the license to be renewed, or the renewal requirement increases to six semester hours. If the license has lapsed for up to five years or longer, six semester hours of coursework are required.
